Firefighers Learning From Mobile Trainer

When battling a deadly blaze, firefighters know seconds can mean the difference between life and death for both themselves and the public they serve.

Whats new? A mobile facility designed to bring the firefighting experience to life, so firefighters will know exactly what to do to save lives.

Fire Training Solutions (FTS) has created the mobile container, a two story structure which can be set up like a residence or commercial building. The trailer is designed to make the firefighter training true-to-life as possible. The training will improve firefighters’ efficiency when they respond to real-life emergencies. The mobile training container is brought to communities whose firefighters could not travel to training facilities.

Mike Bailey from Fire Training Solutions, an Assistant Chief and Fire Service Instructor says, “We realize not everyone can come to a training facility, but we can come to them. A lot of departments don’t have the ability to attend training facilities. The Mobile Container provides extensive live fire training. We have the opportunity to be very, very, very realistic.”

Mike Bailey also says, “Fire departments do not have the opportunity to train their personnel with live fires often. This is why it is so important to do this. Everyone who has trained with it, loves it. This helps give the skills that allow the firefighter to do things correctly and more efficiently. A good learning tool”.

Superior Fire Training Achieved in Sparwood

One of the most difficult tasks in the fire service is to provide personnel with realistic training to prepare them for real life situations. It is a tragedy for fires to rage out of control because a department could not afford to properly train its firefighters. Fire Training Solutions, a company based in Salmon Arm, BC, has created a realistic solution to live fire training. Their goal is ―To provide the absolute best Fire Department training.‖ For this reason Mike Bailey and Glenn Paley of Fire Training Solutions were invited to Sparwood to work with local service personnel.

Ninety firefighters, a mix of members of the Sparwood Fire Department and mine rescue personnel, underwent two days of live fire training. Day one was a lecture and demonstration of equipment at the Main Fire Hall. Day two was hands on live fire training at the Sparwood Heights Fire Hall. A specially designed mobile live fire unit was delivered to the Fire Hall along with several old cars and a dumpster. After a demonstration from Mike Bailey and Glenn Paley, each firefighter took a turn putting out a dumpster fire and a vehicle fire. Each person assisted in the back up position, the attack position, and took a turn on the nozzle. A fire was then set inside the mobile live fire unit. All of the firefighters were closed in and given a demonstration on how to fight a fire in a contained structure and then given a chance to put out the fire. Firefighters were instructed on such things as proper water selection and hydraulic ventilation. The importance of learning these concepts was stressed as safety and effectiveness are of the upmost importance.

Each year approximately 100 hundred firefighters are lost in the line of duty in North America. With proper instruction and hands on training, our local fire personnel are better equipped to keep themselves from harm while protecting us from the dangers of fire. Their hard work and dedication is certainly appreciated.

Big White Fire Department

"After viewing the FTS live fire training unit at the FCABC conference in Nanaimo, our department decided to rent the unit as a viable option to bring live fire training to our members. Living in a somewhat rural area it is very difficult to arrange, schedule and send crews to a live fire training facility not to mention costs. The training unit was delivered and our firefighters set it up the with no problems. Being able to utilize our equipment, apparatus, and crews our department was able to train in a variety of evolutuins. The versatility of the unit added to the training goals and we were able to meet our Module 8 requirmemnts. During the final critiquing all our members had great comments, and I look forward to utilizing this unit next year."

"Due to the location of Fort Nelson it is very difficult for us to obtain credible live fire training.
The live fire training Fort Nelson firefighters received from Fire Training Solutions was excellent.
Fire Training Solutions delivered a professional course and a highly enjoyable week with the mobile live fire unit. Thank you! We will be recommending you to others."
